Afrika hautnah An AIDS Orphans Project in Uganda
Exhibit of photography by Klaus Mellenthin Dates: Oct 1 - Nov 1 Location: Rathaus Stuttgart, Germany Exhibition hours: 8-18:00 (M-F), 8-14:00 (Sat)
In July 2007, Klaus Mellenthin traveled to Uganda to capture the fate of AIDS-orphans with his camera, a Mamiya 645AFD II using a Leaf Aptus 22 digital camera back.
In the villages he found a shocking situation: mud houses without electricity and water, extreme poverty, undernourished children, people suffering from jaundice, tuberculosis and AIDS.
Yet, Klaus wasn’t looking to re-create another traditional image of the poor African children looking with sad eyes towards the camera. His aim was to let the children that are living in the St. Moses Children Care Center shine, and contrast them with the conditions in the villages that they will be sent back to if the Center can not raise enough money.
"With my photographs I wanted to show the quality of life in the Centre compared to the quality of life in the village communities," Klaus Mellenthin explained.
The St. Moses Children’s Community CentreSt. Moses Children’s Community Centre, a Christian organization, is situated in Njeru, Jinja, in Uganda. Its main objectives are the care for orphans, abandoned and abused children in the Centre and in the community, regardless of their faith, tribe or race. More information: http://www.stmosesccc.org/
